Answer: These cells are used to convert the heat and light of the sun into electricity. The photovoltaic cells (PV) are made of semiconductor material such as silicon. They have phosphorous and boron which are used to create conductivity within the cell. When photons present in sun rays hit the PV cells, they energise the electrons present in the atoms of the PV cells. As a result the electrons overcome the bond that attaches them to the atom. The electrons start flowing which generates electric current.
